One of the things we are craving at the moment is to be with each other. We have so many of our senses shut down when we connect with our people right now. We can see them, but can only hear one voice at a time (zoom or teams). We can touch our screen but not touch hands or high five. We can smell our own coffee but not each other. Well maybe that’s a good thing right?!
I propose what we are craving more is connection. Robust and thoughtful conversations. Problem solving the core issues not just ticking something off the list. Being seen as a leader, as a colleague but more importantly, as a human. We don’t have to do this offsite and we certainly don’t have to wait.
If we get back to the purpose of why we want to gather in person. It’s to make clever decisions, agree on a way forward, get to know each other more, deeper. We can do this now.
A new world, requires new thinking. And new design. American Philosopher Thomas Kuhn was renowned for saying (and actioning) that; ‘All significant breakthroughs are break “withs” old ways of thinking.
Blue sky thinking says we can create a new, and better, solution for how we are currently doing things. So let’s do this. The status quo means we go back to the same – and we wait. Let’s not. Let’s use the situation we are in as a way of changing how we do things.
The things we can do really well with online offsites:
Create connection, with each other and ourselves
Solve complex problems where everyone has a say
Talk through and resolve conflict
Discuss the elephants in the room, with respect
Accelerate our self-awareness and reduce blind spots
Get some serious belly laughs
Don’t get in the way of what your people need and want, because you’re thinking it can only happen in person.
