A client of mine last week told me about a performance review he recently ran for one of his leaders. They have worked together for a long time and they are also good mates. Apparently the guy is brilliant. He is smart, comes up with great ideas, is great to be around. But.. he’s also known to be unreliable and can let others down. It can be hard to balance both right? So how do you have the dreaded performance review so they stay inspired to want to work with you and the team yet address what needs to be said.
You do it with a song.
My client told him that his performance can be summed up by Pink’s song: True Love. Play it now… then come back to me 😉
How good is that?! I thought this was hilarious. We can get way to ‘Captain Serious’ when it comes to this time. Lighten up people. We are dealing with humans. Let’s treat them well.
Oh… they had all these conversations all along the way so nothing was a surprise. Then you can play songs like these because you have honoured the person enough in the ‘in between’ conversations.
Performance reviews should be future focused not dwelling on the past. I prefer mine to be ‘Performance Forwards’.
Over to you….
What would your performance song be? Or one for one of your team members?
